In general terms, a ‘passive’ RFID system is configured using tags that require an RF field to energise them. The reader stimulates the tag and the tag responds in less than 100 milliseconds with data, at this point, depending upon the type of tag used, a ‘read only’ or ‘write to’ function can take place.
This technology does not require line of sight or contact between the reader and tags and with the ability to communicate from a few centimetres up to several meters away, digital data can be processed simply and reliably with dramatic results.
An active RFID system is configured using battery powered tags, sealed for a 3-5 year life. These tags constantly transmit unique data and can be read at distances greater than 30 metres.
This technology is also re-programmable and is more expensive than passive but has specific advantages when a long read range is needed.
